SPRING AT EDROM FOR A WHALE OF A TIME Edrom Lodge (www.edromlodge.com.au) will be booked for 4 nights in mid-October. Edrom gives us access to the Light to Light Walk (easy) in the height of the whale-watching season as well as Mt Imlay, Merrica River and further exploration of the Nadgee NP to stretch medium walkers. A group of between 20 and 30 easy and medium walkers fit comfortably into the Lodge @ about $35 pp per day (cost depending on numbers, more meaning less).

Leader: Peter W Walk along the fire trail, then through open eucalyptus forest down to Jinden Creek, a descent of about 250m to lunch. Walk along the creek for about 1km, then through open forest back to the cars. A very pleasant creek. There used to be trout darting between your legs as you crossed the creek. Total climb 300m. Leader: Robyn K From Honeysuckle Creek campground we will walk along the Alpine Walking Track to the Booroomba Rocks car park then follow an overgrown fire trail to the top of Deadmans Hill. Climb 300m. Return via same route. All on track. Map: Corin Dam. Cars. 80km ($10). Meet at K.

Leader: Doug F From Corin Dam we have a long ascent to Stockyard Spur and then along the ridge to join the Mount Franklin Road beneath Little Ginini Mountain. We follow the road south, passing Priors Hut, and after about 2km turn to follow the track to the top of Gingera. Climb: about 850m. Return via the same route. Cars: 90km ($11). Map: Corin Dam. Sat 11 Apr - FADDEN AND WANNIASSA HILLS NATURE RESERVE, MORNING WALK - 7km Easy (6) Leaders: Bent and Karen J From Fadden Pine Plantation walk through Fadden to the western side of the Nature Reserve, up over the hill and back through the reserve on the eastern side and up over McArthur Hill back to the Pine Plantation. Leader: Mac K Starting from the car park on the Old Boboyan Road, we walk along Naas Creek, and turn south west into Sheep Station Creek along the Grassy Creek Fire Trail. We follow this over the saddle and southeast along Grassy Creek. About 1 km before the Boboyan road, in the vicinity of Westermans Hut, we turn north-east along a side creek and follow the obvious line of creeks back to the car park. A walk mostly along valleys and trails, with huts and a little off-track. Climb: 200m. Cars: 160km ($19). Maps: Yaouk, Shannons Flat. Meet at K.

Leader: Doug F From the Tidbinbilla picnic/playgound area we cross the Tidbinbilla River and walk to the restored Nil Deperandum cottage. Then we climb a spur up to Pierce Hill (about 660m) through bush and along a fire trail. Return via the Camel Back Ridge Fire Trail and cut back down to the cars. Cars: 50km ($6). Map: Tidbinbilla. Sat 18 Apr - RENDEZVOUS CREEK TO YANKEE HAT ROCK ART - 10km Easy (7)
Leader: Trevor B This walk is all in open, undulating, short-grass country, with a couple of short sections on tracks. We follow the track on the south side of Rendezvous Creek for about a kilometre, then strike west along a low ridge for two kilometres, looping around to cross Middle Creek and head south to the Yankee Hat rock art. We return via the Yankee Hat walking track to Bogong Creek and follow the creek to cross Middle Creek where the two creeks meet. We return to the cars via a series of low hills, passing close by Gudgenby Homestead. Total climb: 200m. Cars: 130km ($16). Maps: Rendezvous Creek, Yaouk. Meet at K.

Leader: Prue D Starting at the Booroomba Rocks turn-off on Apollo Road, we walk roughly north to Blue Gum Hill. Return same way with a diversion to Gorilla Rock. Mostly off-track with some thick scrub. Total climb 620m with a couple of steep sections. Cars 65km ($8). Map: Corin Dam. Meet at K.

Leader: Margitta A We will wander up and down through the Aranda Bushland into the Frost Hollow, then through the underpass into the Cork Oak Plantation. Return will be by a slightly different route. Sat 25-Mon 27 Apr- ORRORAL TO BIMBERI HARD PACK WALK
Leader: Mac K From the Orroral Tracking Station, we follow the Australian Alps Walking Track to camp in Cotter Flats. On the second day we follow the AAWT towards Murrays Gap, leaving it to cross Bimberi Peak to Leura Gap. A descent on tracks takes us back to the Cotter and a camp in the vicinity of Black Sallee Flat. On the final day we return to Orroral along the Cotter Hut Road. Cars: 90km ($11). This will be a stroll along the old litter-strewn forest roads, Chalet, Wombat and Parrot, and visiting what remains of the Bendora Arboretum. During the walk, described in the book "Above the Cotter", we will try to identify plant (including tree) species and keep a look out for historical items. Bring a copy of the book if you have one. Sat 9 May - PINE ISLAND, POINT HUT, MT STRANGER & TUGGERANONG CREEK - 14km Easy (7)
Leader: Trevor B This is a walk of two loops of 8 km and 6 km. From the middle car park of Pine Island we take the walking trail to Point Hut to join the Bicentennial National Trail (BNT), breaking off to ascend to the trig on Mount Stranger for great views of the Murrumbidgee River valley and beyond. We descend the other side to rejoin the BNT and thence to return to the cars for lunch. After lunch, we resume walking along the BNT, this section to Tuggeranong Creek being an Equestrian Trail, which crosses the historically important Tuggeranong Stone Wall, the only dry stone wall in a rural setting in the ACT. After reaching Tuggeranong Creek we return to a lower part of the wall and join the path alongside the Murrumbidgee to take us back to the cars. Total climb: 150m before lunch; 50m after lunch. Leader: Peter B From Mulloon Creek ford on the Mulloon fire trail, a steady climb through some scrub to a ridge leading to Palerang, total climb 480m. A shorter, steep route down to a fire trail and return to the cars. Old sandshoes for creek crossing are recommended. 4WD is needed for the last road section, but even one would be enough to ferry the group over this section. Cars: 100km ($12). Map: Bombay. Leader: Mac K From the Yankee Hat car park, we follow the Yankee Hat walking track before heading east up the ridge to Little Yankee Hat and then on to Yankee Hat. Return via descent of another ridge to the southeast, and along the old forest tracks through the former Boboyan pine forest. Expect some tough going through regrowth. Climb: 700 m. Leader: Bob C From the Orroral Valley Tracking Station car park, climbing 200m along the way, we walk 4.3km along the Cotter Hut Road/Alps track to the hairpin bend at GR742578. We leave the track and climb 260 m through medium/thick forest roughly northwest until we reach the rocky knoll marked as point 1339. After lunch we descend steeply roughly east to the grassy valley and follow the Ororral River back to the cars. Some rock scrambling. Climb:460m. Cars:100km ($12). We visit the ruins of the William Collier and Glenburn homesteads and one of the earliest European cemeteries in the region. Return along Kowen Forest tracks. Leader: Trevor B From the large car park at Fadden Pines we walk north over Wanniassa Hills NR past a water tank to cross Long Gully Road into Isaacs Ridge NR. After two more kilometres we climb to the trig on the ridge for great views east and follow the ridge south to recross Long Gully Road. We retrace our steps over Wanniassa Hills NR to the water tank and then to the cars by a different route. Total climb: 450m. Maps: Tuggeranong & Canberra and/or Canberra Street Directory. Leader: Max S The walk will be from Orroral Valley car park to Rock Flats. This walk will be along the AAWT both in and return, using any time available to explore Rock Flats. Leader: Peter W Burrinjuck Nature Reserve. The walk is mainly on tracks. First we walk up the fire trail (steep in parts) to Burrinjuck Trig, 500m in 5km, then we walk down a trail for 1km, sidle across a scrubby hillside, then continue around the mountain back to the cars on fire trails. Sat 20 Jun - FROM THARWA BRIDGE TO ANGLE CROSSING - 14km Medium (10)
Leader: Peter W We will walk through the Gigerline Nature Reserve following the true right bank of the river. The only major features are Gigerline Trig, Guises Creek, and views of the Gigerline Gorge. It is generally rolling countryside with open woodland with grass and weeds, but there will be a few short sections of scrub, a few fences to climb, and the odd gully. Leader: Trevor W We will follow the fire trail north from the Brandy Flat South car park for a while, then head east off track to reach the summit of Booths Hill. Some rough going, and quite a climb. After lunch we will drop down on the northern side of the hill, then swing west to meet the fire trail again near Brandy Flat Hut, following it back to our cars. Total climb: 770m. Cars: 110km ($13). Leader: Allan M This is a circuit walk from Square Rock Walk car park (Smokers Gap) and is all off track with some very rough going likely. We walk north to skirt round the hill to the left and avoid the steepest slopes. After crossing Billy Billy Creek we approach the rocks from the east and scramble through the massive boulders to get to the top for extensive views of distant mountains. We return via a prominent boulder to the WSW and thence mostly downhill to the cars. Total climb 250m. Cars: 70km ($8). Map: Corin Dam. Meet at K.

Leader: Judy G Short steep climb to interesting Mushroom Rock. Continue up on fire trail to Gibralter Rocks for wonderful views over Canberra.
