AUTUMN IN THE HAUTE SAVOIE.
The plan is for 2 weeks walking in the Haute Savoie of France in September 2010. One week will be in Chamonix, a town in the valley under Mont Blanc. The area will have spectacular alpine scenery. A second week will be around Lac Annecy.
Both areas will have a range of walks from the high end of easy to hard.

There will be a trip to Perisher staying in a ski lodge from Monday 22 to Sunday 28 March. Provided there are sufficient numbers there will be two walks offered each day, one easy and one medium. Leader: Doug F From Dougs house in Garran we will walk along pathways through the Canberra Nature Park to the top of Davidson Hill to admire the views of Canberra. Then we will go along the ridge path to the cafe at Red Hill Lookout and have brunch. We will return via the fringes of the Federal Golf Course and the Garran Fire Trail to the cars. Climb: 170m. Leader: Davinia W Vineyards, golf course, horse trails, Ginninderra Creek and pot luck lunch. These are the ingredients for a leisurely walk in Belconnen, concluding with a social lunch at the Wells abode in Scullin. Commencing at Belconnen Way we will walk along the Drake Brockman Drive horse trail which allows views of the vineyards [our version of Umbria] into the Holt Golf Course Estate. We will then connect with horse trails bordering the edge of Macgregor and then wind our way along Ginninderra Creek. From there we will navigate the green belts through Holt and Higgins before returning for lunch. Ring leader by Fri 15 January to discuss your contribution to the lunch. Leader: Peter W We walk along the summit of the Brindabella Range from about Mt Aggie to Bendoura Hill, along an old fire break with minor scrub. It should be high enough to be a bit cooler than Canberra. Mainly on track. Climb: 300m. Cars: 160km ($19). Map: Tidbinbilla. Meet at W, leaving at 8am. ***

Sat 23-Wed 27 Jan ETTREMA GORGE Hard Pack Walk
Leaders: Eric & Pat P Joint walk FBI & CBC, exact route to be decided. Entry into the Gorge will possibly be by Transportation Spur or Howards Pass and then proceeding downstream with some side trips. This is a most beautiful area with crystal clear pools for swimming. It is rated hard because of the steep entry and exit. Once in the gorge walking is relatively flat but involves rock-hopping with a pack. Side trips are likely to involve rock-scrambling as well as rock-hopping. Maps: Touga, Caoura. Those who may be interested are asked to contact the leaders for further details.

Leader: Prue D. A morning walk covering Mt Taylor,Oakey Hill, and the back of Curtin, returning by a different route. Lunch in a park with an early finish. A longish walk that can be shortened if it gets too hot. All on track. Climb 300m. Map: Canberra Street Directory. Meet at the Southlands Shopping Centre, near the Woolworths petrol station in Mawson Place, Mawson at 7.30am. ***

Leader: Bob C From the junction between Moonlight Hollow and Chalet Road we follow the NSW/ACT border to Bendoura Hill (climb 200m), then on to Snow Gum Hill (climb 50m) for lunch. Return via Chalet Road. We shall explore the Bendoura Hut and the Bendoura Arboretum. Walking will be off track on low level vegetation for 3km and fire trails for 7km. Total climb: 250m. Leader: Judy G Enjoy nibbles while sipping champagne or fruit juice and admiring the sunset over the Brindabellas. This traditional event is always popular. Bring your own glass or mug and $3 to cover expenses. Total climb 250m. Bring a torch for the walk back down at dusk. The walk will be cancelled if weather is wet. Leader: Peter A From Mt Majura car park we climb Mt Majura and then along ridgeline to Mt Ainslie. Down Mt Ainslie and through scrub back to Hackett. All on tracks. We can expect to finish by lunch time. Total climb: 350m. Map: Canberra Street Map. Meet at Mackenzie Street entrance to Majura Nature Park (near junction with Grayson Street), Hackett at 8.00am. ***

Leader: Peter W From the Misty Mountain Fire Trail bridge we will walk up Sugarloaf Creek on the terraces and river bed, mainly in shade, with swimming in the many pools. Return by a 220m climb up a spur to the road and walk back along the road. The walk is graded medium because of the uneven footing along the rocky creek bed. Beautiful creek and rainforest margins. Climb: 270m. Cars: 240km ($29). Maps: Monga, Currowan. Meet at Q.

Sat 6 Feb GOODRADIGBEE & PEPPERCORN GORGES, KOSCIUSKO NP 8km Medium (11)
Leader: Peter W The objective of the walk is to explore the gorge of the Goodradigbee River and the lower 1km of Peppercorn Creek, about 2km south of the Koorabri property in the Kosciusko National Park. Six kilometres of the walking is in the riverbed, either in the river water, on gravel, or rock scrambling. There will be many compulsory swims, so you will need to waterproof your pack. Rock scrambling will be with wet footwear so will be safest in volleys. Best gorge near Canberra, interesting rocks. Book in with the leader. It will be cancelled if the river is high, or the air too cold. Climb: 200m. Map: Brindabella. Cars: 126km ($15). Meet at W, leaving at 8:30. ***

Leader: David W A walk on fire trails through forest with distant views and a waterside morning-tea stop. We will start from the Mount Franklin Road near Piccadilly Circus and wander along Old Mill Road, Warks Road, Gravel Road, and Moonlight Hollow Road, than climb up Bulls Head to complete the day. Leader: Doug F From the Wog Wog entrance to the Moreton National Park we walk mostly on track to this popular spot in the western Budawangs. We will explore upstream along the Corang River. There is interesting vegetation and there should be an opportunity for swimming at the cascades. Cars: 260km ($31). Map: Corang. Meet at Q at 7:30am. ***

Leader: John C. Cabins or camp sites are available at either Depot Beach or Pretty Beach. We will stay at one or the other depending on availability and numbers. Leader: Philip G. The plan for this walk is to start from Charlotte Pass and take in some of Australias highest peaks. Most of the walk will be off track, some of it will be scrubby and there will be rock scrambling. Each day will involve a total climb of about 800m. Contact leader for more details closer to the date. This walk is also on the NPA(ACT) outings program. Cars: 400km approx ($48). Limit of 8. Bookings close Tue 23 Feb.

Leader: John C We start walking from the corner of Ingledow and Butmaroo Roads. We are walking in the Lockhart property, but close to Ingledow Road. At the top of the hill we continue towards the homestead, but before reaching it we cross the road and head for Gidleigh Hill. From there we walk to Glasgow Hill, crossing Butmaroo Road on the way. We then circle west and south back to the cars. Most of the walk is off track. Climb: 350m. Cars: 70km ($8). Maps: Bungendore and Manar. Meet at Q.

Leader: Paul N From Uriarra Crossing follow the Molonglo River upstream through the gorges. After lunch return either via the same route or partly on the adjacent ridge line. There are swimming holes and it will be necessary to cross the river several times. Cars: 20km ($2). Maps: Canberra, Cotter, Umburra. Meet at W.
Sun 14 Mar STOCKYARD CREEK FALLS 12km Medium (11)
Leader: Eric P The walk will commence at Corin Dam and take the steep walking pad to Stockyard Spur, about 500m climb. We will then descend 200m north through negotiable scrub to a knoll and two waterfalls on Stockyard Creek and along the creek for lunch. We then return to the spur and retrace our steps. Climb 700-900m depending on the route we take. This is a partly exploratory walk (the waterfall and creek section) so we shall see what transpires. Cars: TBA $10-$13. Map: Corin. Leader: John R A long medium walk on the Saturday, and a shorter easy walk on the Sunday. Many possibilities, depending on numbers and preferences for medium and/or easy walking. A beautiful location for camping and fish bothering. Birthday celebration (at least one) on Saturday evening. Make your own way up on Friday via Cooma, Adaminaby and Kiandra. Leader can organise car pooling. Cars: minimum of 400km (min $48).

Leader: Barry M The morning walks may include the Ashbrook Fire Trail, the Hanging Rock, Lyrebird and Cascades Trails. After a BBQ lunch we will look at the Birrigai Time Trail and maybe the Sanctuary Loop. It will be an easy day and we will only do what we are comfortable with. Cars: 70km ($10 inc $2 entrance). Leader: Ken J Walk to the Queanbeyan River via London Bridge, then along the riverbank to Curley Falls for lunch. The banks are scrubby in places and rocky so I suggest long pants, long socks or gaiters. Some wading is possible. We will then climb steeply but slowly to regain the fire trail that leads back to London Bridge. Climb: 100m. Cars: 50km ($6). Map: Captains Flat. Meet at Q.

Leader: Allan M We walk from the locked gate on the Mt Franklin Road, down the old track through the bogs to the Stockyard Arboretum site. We will then descend into Stockyard Creek and climb about 200m off track to Stockyard Spur. The return will be along the fire trail to Mt Franklin Road where we will climb Little Ginini and descend to Stockyard Gap. We then either return to the cars via the road or follow the footpad to the summit of Ginini and then down the old ski-run to the cars. Climb: 550m. Cars: 140km ($17). Map: Corin Dam or ACT 1:100000.
